I began my journey to healthy in 2006 when my mother had an anuerism removed. Over night, I became responsible for her well being and recovery. I wanted to do the best job possible and I wasn't going to rely on the doctors to tell me how to do it. I know better. I put my nose in books, asked my elders, sages and herbalists what I could to help aid her recovery. I was introduced to a world of intrigue. Things were explained to me in ways that made complete sense and I felt 100% in control of my family's health for once. I watched my mother recover her memory, motor, and other skills faster than most expected. She didn't recover 100%. Some of her brain was damaged because she had a stroke during the surgery. She lost some memory and has some weakness and blindness on one side of her body.
During this time, her doctor had mentioned to me that there are studies showing a possible link of aneurisms being hereditary and if I smoked and drank alcohol it could up my chances. At the time I was smoking close to 2 packs a day and had been a smoker for 27 years. I was also a very occasional drinker.
Mr. Joy became sick and had to have surgery during all of this. He had Diverticulitis. Shortly after, I began to experience some mild pain in my stomach. Tests showed I also had Diverticulitis. My doctor recommended surgery. Mr. Joy had major complications and almost died. He was still out of work. Mother was still recovering. I had learned a bunch of things about Diverticulitis but Mr. Joy was just to thick headed to do anything holistic. I told my doctor to give me some time and I would be back in two months.
I ran to the health food store and bought flax seed, DHA, EPA fish oils, triple fiber pills and ate tons of raw spinach and other raw leafy greens daily. The pain went away. I went back to the doctor and was cleared.
I was impressed with the results. The stuff actually works. I was saved from surgery. YAY!!! So, I went to work on other things I wanted to change about myself. I was hooked on this natural stuff and hooked on getting better or healing myself naturally. I didn't want aneurisms so I had to quit smoking. That took several tries. But eight months later with the help of my doctor and Chantix, I kicked the habit for good.... to be continued.
Jump to 2013 It's been 4 and a half years since my last cigarette and 3 and a half since Mr. Joy's last cigarette. I earned my license as a RYT 200 (200 hours yoga instructor course), my zumba instructor license, I need to do a few more Thai yoga works to send in for my license. I no longer work as a deputy sheriff but rather I opened La Vida Yoga and Body Works. I'm living my dream, AT LAST! At last, I'm no longer working for a living. But I'm simply living. I'm a human that is being. I'm being present, in the moment. I'm learning to be. I'm being human. I'm a human, being. I still struggle with my weight. That is going to be a life long fight for me.
Sure there was a lot that happened in between then and now. I'll fill in the blanks as time goes.
